Luise Rainer, who was one of MGM's brightest stars and won two Oscars during the 1930s before tiring of the Hollywood 'machine', has died in London aged 104. Her daughter, Francesca Knittel-Bowyer, said that her mother had died peacefully from pneumonia at home.

"She was bigger than life and could charm the birds out of the trees," she said. "If you saw her, you'd never forget her."
